Grief comes in many forms – the death of a loved one, the loss of a beloved pet, divorce, someone who is dying or even losing a custody battle. The sense of loss and pain is very real and there are many organizations and counselors that can help you deal with the grief experiences at any of these situations and more.

It is the loss of a loved one that the organization GriefShare specializes in. When you lose someone to death, it can be hard to feel happy and hopeful about the future. You may feel isolated in your hurt and don't feel that others truly understand the depth of your grief. The death may bring up your own issues of mortality as well as many other questions that you have never had to think about before.

The GriefShare organization meets every week to help you work through your grief and start to rebuild some semblance of normal life with an optimistic view. The organization uses three tools to help you in the healing process. Video-based round-table is introduced where you might watch different counselors and experts who talk about a variety of topics in regards to grief and the recovery process. Re-enactments, real testimonials and interviews from experts highlight this video.

A support group format is typically followed in one of these GriefShare meetings. After the video is watched, a group leader will kick off discussion about what was just seen and afterwards, everyone talks about what is currently happening in their lives. A workbook issued by GriefShare is something that you must work on in between meetings. Part journal, part exercise, this workbook helps you sort through your feelings.

A GriefShare support group is typically formed under the auspices of a church and many even meet there. As one of the duties of the clergy is administering comfort and understanding, the same holds true for any support groups formed. There are even special sessions for children and teens that have experienced the loss of a loved one and may not be able to grieve properly.

Sometimes, when people have lost a loved one, they may have survivor's guilt and wear it like a cloak. They don't give themselves the time or permission to grieve properly. After a few sessions with a GriefShare support group in your area, you will start to feel closer to the people there and eventually open up. Sharing your anger at the death of a loved one is sometimes half the battle and you know that the people in the support group are in the same boat. After a while, you will discover that you have been given the permission to grieve for your loved one, just through the support of the group.

Grief is a powerful thing. Older people have sometimes willed themselves to die after a loved one because they simply are so deeply hurt that they see no way to live without them. Others live in limbo, just existing, needing that extra push to feel and act. Hopefully, with the GriefShare organization, that compulsion to feel and act is often cathartic and healing.
