Arguments For And Against Euthanasia

There is always a lot of talk about euthanasia, particularly when someone has a terminal illness in which there is no hope of recovery. Some people want to live long as possible but when the pain becomes unbearable and quality of life is basically gone, they want to die on their terms in what they perceive as dignified for them. However, there is a lot of hubbub about euthanasia and in most states it is considered illegal and the person or persons involved in helping someone take their own life could be prosecuted by law.

Most people have an understanding of what euthanasia is but did you know that there are several definitions or interpretations of this act? Euthanasia as a whole is the premeditated act of killing directly or indirectly of a human being dependent health-wise on other means for living. If the death of someone is not intentional, then it cannot be construed as euthanasia.

When a person who is ill requests help from others to kill themselves then it is considered voluntary euthanasia but if no such request was made (i.e. a loved one takes it upon them to commit the act) then it is considered non-voluntary euthanasia. By law, euthanasia by action is the calculated act of committing the act through particular means like a lethal dose of a drug. Euthanasia by omission occurs when nutrients are intentionally withheld so as to cause eventual natural death.

There are many arguments for and against euthanasia and the law is still somewhat in arms over it. Terminally ill patients often reach a certain point where their quality of life is low and extreme pain is commonplace. They fought against illness for as long as they could and just want to die with dignity. They may want to commit suicide and try to enlist someone to help with the euthanasia process. Here are a few reasons why people may want euthanasia:

• They want permanent relief from the horrendous pain they are in.
• They do not want to be a burden to the medical system any longer.
• They do not want linger in this life when the quality of it is so low.

Where there are arguments for euthanasia, there are just as many against the process as well. Here are some of the cons of euthanasia:

• No one wants to see euthanasia as a means to control the cost of medical treatment.
• Medical personnel should not be involved in any way in the assisted death of a patient as they make an oath to protect and save human life.
• Many people feel that euthanasia is degrading to humans.

It can be quite upsetting when a loved one asks you for help in committing euthanasia. The fact of the matter is that it is their life and it is a personal choice for them to die on their own terms. It is also your choice as to whether you not you agree to help in this choice. For this reason, many people are against euthanasia, not because they necessarily think it is right or wrong but that it is a painful thing to ask of someone and they do not want to be put in the position to even be considered to help carry out the dying wishes of a loved one.
