UTI In Men

By Tess Thompson

Amongst different types of infections, UTI rates among one of the most common types. Although women are much more vulnerable to urinary tract infections, men too face severe symptoms associated with of UTI. The incidence and frequency of urinary tract infection in males is related to age. The frequency of UTI in men becomes comparable to that of women only when they approach the age of 60 or are older.

Healthy males without any congenital abnormalities who seek prompt address through urinary tract infection cure suffer no more than the customary distress of a UTI. In complicated cases such as those of a prolonged infection and anatomical abnormalities the prognosis presents a grim situation. Elderly males carry a larger risk of developing pyelonephritis, infection of the kidneys, and any delay treatment can even cause death due to development of bacteremia or sepsis.

The entry of bacteria in men is through the same routes, either from the blood stream downwards or through the urethra up to the bladder and kidneys.

One of the main causes of UTI in men is prostatic hypertrophy. The enlargement of the prostrate gland which restricts smooth flow of urine results in incomplete emptying of the bladder. This urine retention causes bacteria to grow in urine resulting in UTI necessitating bladder infection treatment.

Men who have kidney stones or a catheter inserted for smooth urination carry a greater risk of developing urinary tract infection. In addition, any disorder which inhibits body’s immune system, such as diabetes, can lead to UTI.

Interestingly the use of condoms with spermicidal foam by men surprisingly leads to the presence of E. coli in the vagina of women they have sexual intercourse with.

Urine is normally free from bacteria but in certain cases bacteria, usually E. coli travel all the way from the colon to the urethra and cause infection. Bacteria then can move up to the bladder and then to the kidneys.

Microorganisms such as chlamydia and mycoplasma are transmitted sexually and necessitate urinary tract infection cure for both the partners.
