DIFFERENT TYPES OF ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

By Tess Thompson

The statistics regarding the incidence of high blood pressure or hypertension are indeed startling. Approximately 50 million people in America and nearly one billion people all over the world are affected by hypertension.

It is not difficult to understand why high blood pressure is dangerous. Each time your heart beats, it pumps 2/3 ounces of blood. The heart does this for about 60 to 80 times per minute. That is a whopping hundred thousand times in a day if you are resting. This translates into nearly 2000 gallons of blood that is pumped throughout the 60,000 miles of blood vessels in the body.

Any obstruction in the blood vessels results in:

* A higher force against the walls of the blood vessels making them more susceptible to injury
* Overwork for the heart leading to heart disease
* Inadequate levels of oxygen laden blood to different organs in the body, which can affect organ functioning.

The irony is that a majority of those who have high blood pressure are not aware of it. While chronic hypertension requires protracted treatment with high blood pressure medication , mild to moderate conditions can be easily managed naturally.

Natural remedies for high blood pressure involve simple dietary changes and exercise. Alternative therapies can help to cure the problem of high blood pressure without taking recourse to conventional drugs that often have serious side effects. The focus of alternative treatments is to treat the very source of the disease.

Yoga has numerous asanas (postures) that can keep your blood pressure under control. Breathing exercises, known as pranayama, are an integral part of any yoga program for treating high blood pressure. Yoga is to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian therapy, what psychotherapy is to conventional medicine. While yoga focuses on relaxation, meditation and physical and mental fitness, Ayurveda focuses on correcting internal imbalances that are treated with the aid of herbs and natural foods.

Acupuncture has been practiced in China for thousands of years. It is a natural therapy based on pressure points called meridians. Ancient Chinese medicine believes that all disease is caused by blocking of the vital energy and the yin and yang forces. Small fine needles are inserted into the pressure points to release the blocked energy and relax blood vessels.

Homeopathy is as natural in treatment and approach as the ancient therapies although it is only a couple of hundred years old. Homeopathic remedies are prepared form natural substances, extremely diluted and have no side effects. Homeopathy lays more stress on strengthening the body’s own ability to heal.

Alternative treatments for high blood pressure do not waste too much time on blood pressure readings. They attempt to focus on the cause behind the condition. If it is primary hypertension without any known cause, the attempt is to reduce stress, the most common cause, and institute dietary changes. If there is a known cause behind it, high blood pressure is attempted to be cured by targeting the underlying cause.
