How Does Elderly Depression Happen?

You might wonder how elderly depression happens. After all, you have retired, your home may be paid off, and you always had a million plans of what you were going to do during your golden years, yet suddenly a dark cloud seems to have descended on you and instead of plunging ahead with your plans and making them become reality, you find yourself barely able to get out of bed in the morning, much less board that recreational vehicle you have been polishing for the last five years, in an effort to see the United States.

Elderly depression is not the kind of condition that you can snap out of. Instead, it is a bona fide brain disorder that is biological in nature and that causes measurable changes in the composition and presence of certain chemicals found within the brain itself. A fancy term for these chemicals is neurotransmitters and it is a word frequently used by physicians to explain what is happening inside the brain of a patient suffering from depression.

There is no vaccine against depression and there is nothing you can quit doing such as quitting smoking or start doing such as taking a daily baby aspirin to completely avoid ever falling victim to it. By and large, elderly depression is little more than a brain imbalance with respect to the presence of neurotransmitters and it has been thought that genetics as well as environmental factors play a role in the development or avoidance of the illness.

This explains why oftentimes a doctor will ask if anyone in your family has ever suffered from depression or was treated for it. In the same vein, those who have fairly recently endured a traumatic event be it a personal or fiscal loss are more closely scrutinized for the possibility of developing elderly depression than those who have not had any changes in their circumstances whatsoever.

It is interesting to note that the behaviors you may not have dealt with during your working years might now be catching up with you and thus instead of getting rest from your inability to cope with stress, and your consistently negative outlook on life that might have driven your spouse nuts the last 40 years may now actually come back to haunt you and in some ways contribute to the illness known as elderly depression. As a matter of fact, you may have been suffering from bouts of depression all along but thus far ignored them in the busyness of life, work, and child rearing, and now that many of these obligations have fallen by the wayside, the effects are so much more glaring and obvious.

In the end it does not matter how elderly depression does happen; what matters is the fact that you need to seek help and not let it go by the wayside for another day. Do not permit an easily treatable medical condition to rob you of your life s enjoyment and thus make the golden years become tarnished.
