Understanding What Respite Care Is
The respite care for the injured, ill or
frail person is done in an adult day center, or it can be done in
the home of the person being cared for. It can also be done in an
assisted living facility or even a nursing home.
Respite care is a service provided for family members who care for
someone who is ill, injured or who is frail. Those who are
caregivers have many challenges to face in their task of caring for
a loved one. Their tasks are demanding and they can often neglect
their own health and well being as a result of being so involved in
their caregiving duties. They need time off from their tasks in
order to prevent burnout and to relieve any stress that they are
feeling. Respite care is time off for caregivers that allow them to
recharge mentally, emotionally and physically.
The respite care for the injured, ill or frail person is done in
an adult day center, or it can be done in the home of the person
being cared for. It can also be done in an assisted living facility
or even a nursing home. The objective of respite care is to provide
planned temporary, and substitute care wile the main caregiver is
having a vacation from the duties of caregiving. All caregivers
need respite care whether they care for the loved one in a
residential home, or a facility.
Respite care will be different because the individuals need
different levels of care based on their condition. If the
individual being cared for is a senior there are adult day care
centers, nursing homes and assisted living centers that offer
respite care for a day, weekend or even longer. If the senior
individual needing care is able to move around they may go to an
adult day care center once or twice a week on a regular basis to
give respite on a regular basis.
Respite Care When A Child Is Involved
Respite care is not just for when the caregiver is caring for an elderly individual. Some families find themselves caring for a sick or disabled child and are also in need of respite services. In this case respite care is short-term care that the family needs in order for the caregiver to have a break from the daily routine and the stresses involved in caring for a child with special needs. This respite care typically takes place in the child's home.
Care for Cargiver
|
Caregivers need respite care in order to relieve the stress that
they face in their role as caregiver. Burnout is a real
possibility. The symptoms of caregiver burnout are persistent
symptoms of depression, a constant state of anxiety, irritability,
or anger, feelings of detachment, or exhaustion, or being in a
constant state of self-criticism. They can also experience
withdrawal from their usual activities, a neglect of caregiving
responsibilities, trouble with relationships and also engage in
substance abuse in a ploy to deal with burnout.
Fortunately there are many ways for caregivers to prevent
burnout. Respite care is a very important part of preventing
burnout and those who participate in providing respite care offer
much advise to caregivers regarding burnout prevention. Some of
their advice includes scheduling regular evenings out or weekends
away by using respite care, during times when respite care is not
possible inviting friends over, or at the least engage in phone
conversations with family members or friends. It is surprising how
spirits can be lifted by a friendly conversation. They also caution
caregivers to make sure they eat nutritious meals. Stress may cause
them to desire sweets, and alcohol but they must resist in order to
stay healthy. In addition to eating healthy regular exercise is
also important in dealing with stress. Support groups are excellent
sources of support and encouragement when battling burnout.
