Why A Strong PC Muscle Is Important

Why a strong PC muscle is important becomes obvious as soon as its functionality is considered. Known as the pubococcygeus muscle, it is found in both males and females and located in the pubic area of the body. In the male, this muscle cradles the prostate and also touches on the rectum, and bladder. In women, it is connected to the rectum, vagina, and bladder opening.

A healthy and strong muscle is associated with the control of normal urinary urges, while a weakened muscle is often considered to be a contributory factor in involuntary incontinence. During childbirth it has additional functions for the female, while during sexual intercourse it is considered to be instrumental in increasing sensation, arousal, and strength of the orgasm in both men and women.

It has been surmised that a strong PC muscle will not only benefit control over continence, but also decrease instances of premature ejaculation in men while enabling both men and women to experience multiple orgasms during intercourse. To this end, several publications on and off line are available which now offer a variety of exercises which are thought to strengthen the muscle if weakened, or proactively strengthen the muscle.

On the other side of this debate are those who consider the proactive strengthening of the pubococcygeus muscle to be counterproductive in males who are at risk from experiencing sexual dysfunction related to premature ejaculation. It has been surmised that an over-exercise of the muscle leads to strains which then subsequently put undue pressure onto the male prostate which serves to hasten rather than halt impending ejaculation.

It is therefore a wise decision to seek the advice of a competent physician specializing in male health and sexual dysfunction. Interestingly, in some cases it has been found that stimulation of the pubococcygeus muscle via exercise is leading to PE simply because the prostate is enlarged, and yet a failure to receive medical attention will not bring this condition to the forefront and thus to treatment until it is discovered during a routine physical exam, which may be many months – in some cases even years – off.

For women, on the other hand, strengthening of the PC muscle is vital after childbirth to maintain control of the urinary functions. Therefore the importance of the muscle exercises is usually discussed during the post partum examination by both obstetricians and also nursing staff.

A complete set of exercises, known as Kegel workout, has been devised and following this regimen will assist women to ensure not only a return of the pelvic musculature to normal levels, but to also assist during childbirth after future pregnancies.

Generally speaking, both men and women will be wise to not get their pubococcygeus muscle exercises from the Internet but instead discuss this course of action with a medical practitioner prior to starting them to ensure that not only will the exercises be done without putting undue strain on the muscle, but also to ascertain if this kind of exercise is truly a healthy and useful course of action for each and every individual.
